Genesis
Genesis is the first book of the Bible. The book starts with the big origin stories, including the creation of the world, the fall into sin, the flood, and the tower of Babel. Then Genesis focuses on Abraham and his family. As you read, one thing to consider is God's covenant relationship with his people. How does God's relationship with his people develop over Genesis?

Day 37

Holy Days or Holidays

Read: Leviticus 22-23

Human nature is such that we need special days to break up the routine of life. God recognized this need by giving the children of Israel several annual feast days as well as the weekly Sabbath. These days also were times to recall the mighty works of God which he had done on their behalf.

While the emphasis of the New Testament is that all of life is to be dedicated to God, and that we are to continually remember the great events in which God acted on our behalf, it is helpful to set aside certain days to remember what God has done for our sake.

Long before the giving of the Ten Commandments, God gave his people the weekly Sabbath, a time to rest and reflect on his goodness to them. It is of great value to make Sunday a special day of rest and worship. One of the factors leading to the problems many people have today is that they live from weekend to weekend rather than from Lord’s Day to Lord’s Day.

It is also helpful to set aside days like Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, and Pentecost to remember the events in the life of Christ which have produced our salvation. Sadly, some of these special days have become commercialized while others are forgotten. Many people have become spiritually impoverished as a result. Let us focus on Christ on these special days.

PRAYER
Father, help us to use Sunday and special days of the year to lead to our spiritual growth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
