Genesis
Genesis is the first book of the Bible. The book starts with the big origin stories, including the creation of the world, the fall into sin, the flood, and the tower of Babel. Then Genesis focuses on Abraham and his family. As you read, one thing to consider is God's covenant relationship with his people. How does God's relationship with his people develop over Genesis?

Day 217

The Message of Comfort

Read: Isaiah 40-41

The first 39 chapters of the book of Isaiah were addressed to Judah prior to the captivity. They are primarily warnings that unless there is repentance, tragedy will follow. Mingled with these warnings are words of hope.

At chapter 40, there is a new emphasis. The messages are addressed to the people who have been suffering in exile. The good news is that now God is about to act on their behalf. The section begins with a note of joy: “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God” (40:1). “Behold, the Lord God comes with might . . . He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms” (40:10-11). These words were fulfilled when God brought the Jews back from exile in Babylon, but with the figure of the Good Shepherd we can see an even greater fulfillment in Christ. “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord” (v. 3) is quoted by the Gospel writers describing John the Baptist’s ministry preparing for the arrival of Jesus on the public scene.

There is comfort because God has the power to deliver his people, for in his sight “the nations are like a drop from a bucket” (40:15). There is comfort because God’s message to his people is “Fear not” (41:10, 13-14). Are you downhearted? Look to God to lift you up. He is able! Share the message of comfort with a downhearted friend.

PRAYER
Father, we praise you because you will comfort all those who look to you in sincerity. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
