Genesis
Genesis is the first book of the Bible. The book starts with the big origin stories, including the creation of the world, the fall into sin, the flood, and the tower of Babel. Then Genesis focuses on Abraham and his family. As you read, one thing to consider is God's covenant relationship with his people. How does God's relationship with his people develop over Genesis?

Day 167

The Word of God

Read: Psalms 19-22

This section contains outstanding psalms. Psalm 19 is divided into two parts. The first extols God’s revelation in nature. The second gives even higher praise to the greater revelation in the written Word. It describes the greatness of God’s Word and the wonderful effect it has on those who read it and apply it to their lives.

The twentieth psalm talks about the day of trouble and expresses the desire that God may answer prayer in such a day. “May he grant you your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your plans!” (v. 4 ESV). The important thing is that we desire the right things and that our plans are of such a nature that they are worthy of being fulfilled. What is the greatest desire of your heart?

The 21st psalm tells of those prayers being answered, “You have given him his heart’s desire” (v. 2 ESV). How wonderful to want the right things and to receive them. Then “We will sing and praise your power” (v. 13 ESV).

In amazing detail, Psalm 22 describes the crucifixion of Christ. He himself drew our attention to it when, being crucified, he cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (v. 1 ESV). Other references to his crucifixion are, “All who seek me mock at me” (v. 7) “My strength is dried up” (v. 15) and “They have pierced my hands and feet” (v. 16).

PRAYER
Father, we praise you that your Word tells us of your Son Christ and of his crucifixion. In his name. Amen.
