The Lord’s Steadfast Love

Read: Psalms 107-110

Psalm 107 describes four scenes where people are in trouble. Then come the words, “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.” Then there is a description of how the Lord delivered them, followed by the refrain, “Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to the sons of men!” After the fourth scene, there is a description of how God blesses people, with the final conclusion, “Let men consider the steadfast love of the Lord.”

The words “steadfast love” are a translation of the Hebrew term chesed, one of the most beautiful words in the Bible. It speaks of God’s faithfulness, of his covenant love, which is absolutely dependable. Let us consider that marvelous love of God and let it motivate us to praise him in song and through obedient lives.

Psalm 108 consists of the endings of Psalms 57 and 60. Both of these psalms begin with stress and end on a positive note. Psalm 109 is one of those psalms that cries out for vengeance. Such psalms fall short of the forgiving spirit of the New Testament, but they do express the honest feelings of people who have been terribly mistreated.

Psalm 110 is quoted 21 times in the New Testament. It speaks of both the lordship and priesthood of Christ, who is now seated at the right hand of the Father.
