Read: Romans 12:14-21
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (v. 21)
Sometimes, I feel like there is evil all around me. I hear about a mass shooting, and innocent lives taken. I read a story about men, women, and children forced into slavery by human traffickers. My news is filled with wars large and small taking place around the world. In my own community, I know that people live with the evils of abuse, addiction, extreme poverty.
So as everyday, God-loving people how do we combat the evil we hear of, see up close, or even know personally? By remembering that Christ has already claimed the victory over sin and death on behalf of us and for all who call on his name. We bear witness to this victory ourselves as we act justly toward those around us and believe that through our prayers and acts of goodness, evil can be overcome.
Consider how you can overcome evil in your neighborhood, community, or in an even broader way. Is there someone you know who would be blessed by a listening ear? Is there an organization working for justice that you can support financially? Is there a missionary serving in a high-conflict region who would appreciate a note of encouragement? Addressing evil with good is something we are all capable of because of Christ’s victory evidenced by his own words in John 16:33, “In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world” (MSG). —Joy Petroelje
