Read: Revelation 3:14-22
If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. (v. 20)
Recently we had out-of-state relatives make the long trip to come and see us in Michigan, including one cousin I hadn’t seen in 30 years. We had a wonderful visit. Our sweetest time together was over shared meals, as we talked, reminisced, laughed and got reacquainted. Soon all the family bonds of love and friendship seemed as strong as ever.
Over the course of these meditations we have seen Jesus as he shared meals with family, friends, and even some enemies. We have seen his compassion for the lost and hurting. We have seen his love for his own. Today, we’re reminded that he wants to have this close fellowship with each of us too. This letter to the church in Laodicea indicates that Christ is not happy with a “lukewarm” relationship with his own (v. 16). The Laodiceans were deceived into thinking they were spiritually healthy and even blessed; they didn’t understand their true condition. They not only needed Jesus; they needed to want Jesus. Jesus told these believers this was possible; he was waiting at the door, waiting to share the closeness of table fellowship with those who desired him. All they needed to do: open the door!
Do you desire this kind of closeness with Jesus? Invite him to your table! Spend time reading his words, praying to him, and enjoying his fellowship. He enjoys spending time with you!
As you pray, ask for the desire to want Jesus and his sweet fellowship in your life.
