Read: John 12:1-11
Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.” (v. 7)
Dinner with friends is usually a sweet time of fellowship and special remembrances, but it can be especially poignant when you know you’ll soon be parted. Jesus was coming to the end of his time on earth with his disciples, and they, for the most part, seemed unaware of his impending death. But one person had been listening, and she understood. This meal, for her, was an opportunity to love and honor him before his death on the cross for her.
After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, a special dinner was given in his honor in Bethany. Lazarus, Martha, and Mary were there, as well as the disciples and many other guests. This was about a week before the Passover in Jerusalem. Jesus was a frequent guest of this family, and Mary would sit at his feet to hear his teaching (Luke 10:39). For some time Jesus had been telling them that he would soon be delivered up to death, yet his disciples were either not listening or not understanding. But Mary understood. She was already mourning his death as she anointed him with costly perfume. While her actions confused the disciples, Jesus knew her motivation. He was touched by her love and devotion.
Judas was distracted by the cost of the perfume, and the others were distracted by Lazarus. But Mary was focused on Jesus; she knew she would “not always have [him]” (v. 8). What is your focus today?
