Read: Matthew 2:1-12
He restores my soul. (Psalm 23:3a)
Today is Epiphany. It is a time when believers in many Christian traditions celebrate the magi coming from afar to worship Jesus. The magi followed an unusual star that guided them. In his commentary on this passage, Matthew Henry said, “This star was the token of God’s presence with them; for he is light and goes before his people as their Guide. He guides with his eye (Ps. 32:8), and said to them, This is the way, walk in it.”
In our reading today, Matthew quoted the prophet Micah who foretold of a ruler that would come from Bethlehem to shepherd God’s people (v. 6). Jesus, the good shepherd is that ruler. Jesus came as an infant into this dark world to bring healing and restoration. Because of sin, we were condemned to death. But Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life” (John 5:24). Jesus brings us from condemnation into eternal life. He offers a path to forgiveness, restoring our souls and restoring our relationship with God. This is the way, walk in it—walk restored.
Where do you need his restoration in your life? Take time to confess your sin and share your suffering with God today. Give your brokenness to Jesus, our shepherd and allow him to restore your soul today.
As you pray, ask God to restore your soul, and give thanks for the restoration he offers.
