God’s Marvelous Light

Read: 1 Peter 2:1-10

You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (v. 9 NIV)

Do you mind being God’s possession? The idea of belonging to anyone is a hard sell, particularly in the United States where we value freedom above everything. Rugged individualists don’t lay themselves on the altar lightly. Still, no matter how “free” we think we are, we all serve something or someone.

Years as a follower of Christ have helped me not just tepidly “swallow” the idea of belonging, but gradually grow to appreciate its goodness, and eventually love, depend on, and surrender to it. When I rejected God and went my own way, practically every decision I made was wrong. I tried and tried to think through what to do in given situations, but I was compass without needle—mentally, morally, and spiritually incapable of good judgment. I became ensnared, trapped, more broken than ever.

As God called me out into his marvelous light, freedom was hard won. But giving up my broken compass was worth the fight. I want to belong here, part of a people who once were not a people; a kingdom where all of us are priests—not just a privileged few; a beloved inheritance to God, sung over, watched over, helped on the journey, causing joy in heaven as I dance in marvelous light. —Amy Clemens

As you pray, allow the marvel of marvelous light to fill you with joy.
