A Meal in Emmaus
Read: Luke 24:13-27

After his resurrection, Jesus met with his disciples, friends, and family on several occasions. Some of these gatherings involved food! In one instance, Jesus ate some fish to prove it was really him, in his body—not a ghost or spirit (vv. 41-42). The resurrected Savior was indeed the same Jesus—their friend and teacher. But they didn’t always recognize him right away.
Let’s consider the two travelers on the road to Emmaus. They were deep in conversation as they walked together, looking sad as they tried to make sense of their time in Jerusalem. They had believed that Jesus of Nazareth was “the one to redeem Israel” (v. 21), but his death at the hands of their leaders seemed to bring that into question. Also, they had heard rumors of angels that very day—rumors that Jesus might be alive! They were confused, grieving, and dismayed. Even as they poured their hearts out to him, they didn’t realize that Jesus was right there with them! The answer to all their questions was right there. The fulfillment of their prayers—right there! They just didn’t know it yet. This is so like us; we can focus on our problems and fail to see Jesus in the midst of our grief and pain and confusion.
Jesus used the Scriptures to reveal what the Bible said about the suffering and the glory of the Messiah. Soon he would reveal himself to his friends in a different way!
As you pray, remember how Jesus has always been with you in all circumstances.
