Christ’s Blood Frees Us

Read: Zechariah 9:9-13

As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit. (v. 11 NIV)

Evangelist John Wesley was stopped one night by a highwayman. This thief robbed the Methodist leader of all his money. Wesley said to the man, “If the day should come that you desire to leave this evil way and live for God, remember that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin.” Some years later, Wesley was stopped by a man after a church service. “Do you remember me?” the man asked. “I robbed you one night, and you told me that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin. I have trusted Christ and he has changed my life.”

Today’s passage describes God’s mighty work, in acting for the people with whom he has made his covenant. The Gospel writers took the image in verse 9 of a coming king riding on a donkey and applied it to Jesus (Matt. 21:5; John 12:15). The Messiah would come as a deliverer (v. 11), inspiring hope in God’s people.

Imagine with me, every person who does evil; they can all be set free by a single drop of the blood of Jesus Christ. It can free each one of us from our hurting past (Rev. 1:5), wash us as white as snow (Isa. 1:18), purify us (1 John 1:7), redeem us (Eph. 1:7), and reconcile us back to God and to each other (Rom. 3:25). There is power in the blood of Jesus Christ. —Rev. Godfrey Kyome (Assistant Executive Director, Words of Hope Uganda)

As you pray, declare the blood of Jesus upon your life in Jesus’ name.
