The Spirit That Is on You

Read: Numbers 11:16-18, 24-25

I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them. (v. 17)

Though no one knows exactly where it originated, the expression “It’s lonely at the top” has been applied to leaders for more than a century. This phrase does not appear in the Bible, but it certainly describes Moses’ state of mind in the books of Exodus and Numbers. Moses served as God’s solitary leader through the upheaval and uncertainty of the journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. As the Israelites raised one complaint after another, the pressures of leading God’s unruly people felt like too much. Moses said, “What shall I do with this people?” (Exod. 17:4).

In this age of upheaval and uncertainty, we often find ourselves overwhelmed. Like Moses, you may find yourself throwing up your hands and crying to God, “What shall I do . . . ?”

The Lord responded to Moses’ cry by providing help. The Lord appointed human leaders to share the load. More importantly, the Lord provided a supernatural Helper: his Holy Spirit. God does the same for us. He provides human helpers when we need them most. And God offers the sure, steady supernatural help of his Holy Spirit to his servants. Look for the human helpers God has placed in your life. And lean on the supernatural Helper God freely offers every believer in Jesus. The same Spirit God placed on Moses is our help whenever we need him. —Ben Van Arragon
