Public Affirmation

Read: Luke 7:24-28

I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. (v. 28)

Can you think of a time when you were hurting and feeling low, and someone was there to support you? Perhaps there was a time when you were picked on and someone stood up for you, a moment when you made a poor decision, but someone believed in you, or a time when your confidence was low and someone complimented you. Sometimes, a little affirmation goes a long way toward encouraging our heart.

When John the Baptist’s faith wavered, Jesus sent John’s disciples back to him with words of affirmation for the work he had faithfully carried out. But that was not all. To those standing there and to everyone who has read these words since, Jesus said, “I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John” (v. 28). That was Jesus’ way of saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matt. 25:21). John had accomplished his mission and purpose. He prepared the way and pointed to Jesus. John was faithful through imprisonment and until death.

In the world’s eyes, John didn’t have much. His clothes and the food he ate were far from luxurious. But in the eyes of Jesus, John was a great blessing and a faithful messenger. He did what God equipped him to do. Perhaps you’re feeling down, and God can use the promises of his Word to fill you with hope and joy. Perhaps you can encourage someone today who is hurting.

As you pray, ask God to lift you up and use you to make a difference.
