Befriending Faithfulness

Read: Psalm 37:1-11

Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. (v. 3)

I discover the connection between faithfulness and delight whenever I mow my lawn. Most of the time I don’t mind the job, but on busy days I think, “I better get this done so my neighbors don’t regret living next to me.” I start the job out of duty but end up delighting in the scent of freshly mown grass and in the feeling of a job well done. By embracing little opportunities for faithfulness, we discover anew the transformational power of delight.

Psalm 37 tackles a troubling question: why do the wicked prosper? Rather than dwell on the unfairness of it all, the psalm writer counsels us to “befriend faithfulness” and “delight yourself in the LORD.” (vv. 3-4) We cannot fix every broken situation, but through faithfully doing our parts we become more like Jesus. By being faithful in small decisions, we will delight in God and contribute to the peace God intends for this world.

Verse 10 continues, “In just a little while, the wicked will be no more.” In the end, God will set everything right and make all things new. For today, we can choose small acts of faithfulness, little deeds of love. By befriending God’s faithfulness we can be transformed into faithful people, making our little corner of the world a place where peace overflows—a foretaste of God’s coming reign of peace. Little by little, the will of God will be done on earth as it is in heaven. —April Fiet

As you pray, ask God to help you befriend his faithfulness.
