A Promised Home

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. (v. 16)

In our family, we have two philosophies of campfire tending. I tend to be a “let it be” tender; if the fire’s burning, leave it alone until it’s not. It’s good, why mess with it? My husband, though, is a tinkerer; the fire’s good, but with just a little shifting, it might be even better. This is not so much about needing the fire to be perfect. It’s more of an openness to letting go of what’s good to pursue something better.

Perhaps Abraham was a tinkerer as well. Life was good for Abraham when God spoke to him and told him to leave his home (Gen. 12:1-5). Abraham didn’t refuse to go or argue with God that things should just be left alone. He trusted that God had something better for him and, even though he couldn’t see what was to come, he answered the call. In faith, Abraham trusted and followed. He left what was good for what he trusted would be better, because he believed God’s promises to him.

We too are called to a more perfect home. Whether life is a struggle and you long for something better, or life is good and the pieces seem to be falling into place, God may call you to leave where you are and travel to someplace better. When God calls, will you have faith like Abraham to leave, trusting that God will lead you to a more perfect home?
