A Moment of Doubt

Read: Luke 7:18-23

And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” (vv. 18-19)

Have you experienced a time when your faith wavered? Perhaps you experienced the loss of a loved one, a health issue, a financial setback, or the loss of a dream. In tough times, it’s normal to wonder why God doesn’t feel near. Doubt is part of most believers’ faith journey.

John the Baptist experienced doubt at least once in his life. Matthew 11:2-3 tells us this occurred while he was in prison. John wondered if Jesus was really the one, so he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (v. 3 NIV). John had a front-row seat to the baptism of Jesus, the opening of heaven and the descending of the Holy Spirit upon God’s Son. John knew Jesus as the Light of the World and the Lamb of God. Yet on this later occasion, he wanted to be sure.

Jesus didn’t get upset with John. Jesus told John’s disciples to go back and tell him about all the fruit of his ministry—the lives changed, sick healed, and dead raised. Jesus knew that John would understand and that it would bring joy to his heart. You will have seasons of doubt. There will also be times when you can encourage someone who is doubting.

As you pray, lift up your questions and worries to God. Cast “all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
