The Value of Silence

Read: James 1:16-27

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. (v. 19)

Have you ever regretted a conversation that turned out to be unproductive? Sometimes, I have dropped my guard and later wondered, ā€œWhy did I say that? What was the point? How did it edify the listener?ā€ Often, strong feelings and emotions overpower objectivity in our speech, and one realizes later, only after the damage is already done. Once a gentleman told me he was praying for his leader to remain quiet. ā€œWhy?ā€ I asked. He whispered, ā€œIn silence, he looks wise, but when his mouth opens, foolishness comes out.ā€

What can be done about it? Start by listening to your Spirit-led conscience soaked in the Word of God. It’s also healthy to honestly share one’s shortcomings with one’s spouse or a trusted friend. No matter how long we have been following Jesus, we must never allow complacency or pride to hinder this never-ending growth toward maturity.

This starts with the inner condition of our heart and mind. Jesus reminded us that ā€œout of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaksā€ (Matt. 12:34). While rebuking Peter, Jesus told him, ā€œYou are not setting your mind on the things of Godā€ (16:23). Only a pure heart and mind can enable us to enjoy a better balance of silence and speech. Both our hearts and minds need renewal in the Lord. Take time with God to pray and share these concerns with him today.

As you pray, ask God to purify your heart and mind.
