Love Your Enemy

Read: Matthew 5:38-48

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (vv. 44-45)

In May 2023, violence broke out in the state of Manipur, India. Over the next year, more than 200 Christians were killed, more than 1,000 villages and 700 churches were burned to the ground. With the loss of life, homes, and life savings, victims from the two communities are living with uncertainty and fear. These believers have been left wondering how to respond.

When oppressed and persecuted, it’s natural to cry, raise our voices in protest, and express frustrations in anger. However, believers in Jesus are empowered to respond differently (Rom. 8:37). We are gifted with the truth of Scripture, the empowering Holy Spirit, and the hope of eternity. With the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we can stand on the right side, speak out for justice, and remain committed to the Word of God. Despite the evil acts of some authorities and corrupt institutions, believers in Christ must not fail to do good. Anger is understandable, but revenge is never acceptable.

We can be encouraged by the testimony of Jesus’s first followers. Peter gives this instruction: “This is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor” (1 Peter 2:15-17).

As you pray, lift up believers facing persecution today and ask God to strengthen your faith.
