The Witness of Solomon

Read: 2 Chronicles 9:1-12

Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and set you on his throne as king for the LORD your God! (v. 8)

During the years I taught at a Christian school, we had a number of international students attend for a “study abroad” year. While the students came to improve their English skills, a number discovered something unexpected—a new life in Christ! Many heard about Jesus for the first time, and some professed faith in him before they returned home.

The Queen of Sheba has heard incredible things about Solomon and his kingdom. She comes to Jerusalem with servants and gold—and hard questions! As she meets with Solomon, the king is able to address “all that was on her mind” (v. 1). As she observes his kingdom’s splendor, the queen realizes that Solomon’s God is responsible for his wisdom and power. Surely God has blessed this king! The Queen of Sheba comes to meet Solomon—but she leaves blessing Solomon’s God. “Blessed be the LORD your God,” she tells Solomon, “who has delighted in you” (v. 8).

Solomon’s life was a powerful witness to this pagan queen who desired to know more about him. Our lives, too, should be a witness to those around us. Do others see that we are different? Do they know that it is our faith in God that gives us peace and joy? Even wisdom? Let’s be witnesses to the grace of God that is in Christ alone! —Laura N. Sweet

As you pray, ask God to make your life a witness for him.
