Jesus Is God the Son

Read: Hebrews 1

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. (v. 3)

Family resemblance can be a funny thing. I never thought any of our three children looked much like either me or my husband—but they sure resemble each other! My four-year-old grandson looks more and more like his daddy every day. And his baby sister? She looks a lot like him! Most families have some distinctive features that give them similarities in their appearance.

But the likeness of God the Son to God the Father goes beyond mere family “resemblance!” Hebrews 1 says that Jesus is “the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature” (v. 3). It credits Jesus not only with the creation of the world but states he also “upholds the universe by the word of his power.” He is greater than human beings, greater than angels, and his throne will last forever. He is clearly God himself! The writer of Hebrews quoted a number of Old Testament passages that point to this truth.

Just as God spoke to his people through the prophets in the Old Testament, he is speaking to us today through his final “word”—Jesus. In yesterday’s reading, Jesus told Philip that “whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). The glory and grace we see in Jesus is the glory and grace of God. —Laura N. Sweet
