Growing in the Word

Read: Colossians 3:12-17

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (v. 16)

The last day of the year is an appropriate time for reflection. The year that is ending has brought challenges and joy. Perhaps it has been a year of growth or a year of just surviving day by day. In any case, in today’s Bible reading Paul offers us a beautiful encouragement for tomorrow and the whole year ahead.

One Albanian devotional reader echoes Paul’s words with this encouragement: “As Christians, we do need God in every step and every moment of our lives. Our love for him and his Word is what makes us grow; it is what gives us life and a purpose to live. We all need a word from the Lord and different testimonies to grow in our faith. This is what Words of Hope does with its daily devotionals and the messages they give. Thank God for these devotionals, and blessed is he who nurtures us with his Word.”

God’s Word nurtures us, and helps us to grow in all the virtues listed in verses 12-17: compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, love, peace, and thanksgiving. These qualities help us in our relationships with each other and people with whom we want to share the love of Jesus. As you begin the new year, consider how you can incorporate regular Bible reading and encouragement in your life, just like this sister in Christ in Albania. —Christy Prins & Megan Nollet

As you pray, ask God to help you grow in your faith.
