Rich Blessing

Read: Proverbs 10

The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. (v. 22)

At some point in your life, you have probably been told, “Work hard. Get a good education. Apply yourself. Stick to it. Save your money. Get ahead.” Maybe you have even said those things to someone else. It’s good advice. In fact, many of the proverbs offer this wisdom in some form or another.

But has anyone ever told you, “Get the Lord’s blessings”? That advice is unusual. People don’t usually think that way. We think about material wealth, material goods, and material success. “Strive for these things and live” is the world’s way. But shouldn’t we want to strive for the greatest wealth of all, God’s blessings?

Yes, strive for and work hard for God’s blessings. Live in pursuit of his truth. Fill your mind with his words to know who he is and what he wills for your life. Pursue God’s blessing as you, “let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice” (Ephesians 4:31). “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17).

Real wealth comes when you allow the Lord to “bless you and keep you . . . [to] make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you . . . [and to] lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26). —Bob James

As you pray, thank God for the riches of his blessings.
