Get Wise

Bob James

Read: Proverbs 2:7-15

Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path. (v. 9)

Do you think much about right and wrong? Do you talk much about what is right and wrong in the world? This proverb encourages us to see the role that wisdom plays in understanding right from wrong. It celebrates the victory of wisdom, but it also warns of the horrible, evil alternative to wisdom. Verses 13-15 show where evil leads: to hurtful, slanderous words, to dark pathways to sin, to delight in living the wrong way, to rejoice in the actions that harm yourself and others, and to turn you completely away from God. In contrast, wisdom leads the seeker on a pathway of goodness: right living, and true life as you become wise in the Lord’s ways.

In short, life without wisdom is a life that will destroy you and your loved ones. Base your life on God’s wisdom, and “discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, delivering you from the way of evil” (vv. 11-12). You want to save your family. You want to save your own life, and protect what is most precious to you. So get wise.

The source of wisdom is simple. Pick up the Bible. Read it. Discover it, and you will become wiser. Fill up your life with Jesus and his truth. When you know good, you will lock out evil. You will lock in wisdom. You and yours will live. —Bob James
