Wonder over Weariness

Read: Psalm 145:1-16

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. (v. 3)

In September of 2022 my husband and I traveled to Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains State Park in the Upper Peninsula. It was a “wonderful” trip, in that it was literally filled with wonder. We hiked on forest trails, discovered waterfalls, and visited the “Lake of the Clouds” in the misty hills. Those hills were covered with autumnal color! My husband and I left the park refreshed and delighted, with plans to return someday soon.

Wonder is a sure cure for weariness, and there is so much wonder in the Scriptures. In Psalm 145, David meditates on the wonder of the Lord himself—in his character and works. He is the greatest wonder of all! David speaks about God’s abundant goodness and righteousness (v. 7), his mercy and grace (v. 8), and his glory and power (v. 11). His kingdom is eternal! We see God’s character in his mighty deeds—not only for his people, but for all life on earth. He satisfies the desires of every living creature (v. 16). And for those who are falling, bowed down with burdens and cares? He upholds them and raises them up (v. 14).

Are you bowed down with weariness today? Look up! Think on the wonder of the God who loves you, who gave himself for you—the God who has great plans for you. Let that be the cure for your weariness. He is a great God, and greatly to be praised.

As you pray, praise God for all that he is, and all that he does.
