Read: Psalm 103:8-22
Bless the LORD, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word. (v. 20)
What comes to mind when you picture angels? Do you imagine shiny, winged beings robed in white, or fat floating babies with golden halos and harps? Most of what we believe about angels comes from popular culture instead of Scripture. In contrast, the Bible shows us that angels are powerful beings who communicate God’s love, character, and purposes for humanity.
Angels dwell in the unseen spiritual realm; when they appear to humans, they make the mysteries of God clear to humankind—turning invisible spiritual principles into everyday realities. The word most commonly used for “angel” in both the Old and New Testament simply means “messenger.” In this sense, all angels are messengers—though not all messengers are angels. God speaks to us continually through his Word, creation, and the Holy Spirit, but God’s angels have a special function in communicating with his people personally and directly.
Throughout this series, we will examine the different messages and spiritual truths that God delivers to his people through angels in the story of Scripture—precious revelations that are just as valuable for God’s people today as they were back then. When we take time to explore the role of angels throughout Scripture and apply what we learn to our everyday lives, we are faithfully enacting Paul’s instruction to “look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen,” because “the things that are unseen are eternal” (2 Cor. 4:18).
As you pray, ask God to open your eyes to eternal truths.
