John’s Purpose

Read: Luke 1:16-17

He will go before him . . . to make ready for the Lord a people prepared. (v. 17)

Do you believe that God has a purpose and plan for your life? He does. Consider these words from Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD.” God made us “in his own image” (Gen. 1:27), and we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Ps. 139:14). We can serve God in many ways with our time, talents, and treasures. Sometimes we don’t even realize the impact we have had on others until we look back and see how God has worked through us.

John the Baptist had a purpose. His unique role as described in Luke 1:16-17 was to help prepare people for the coming of Jesus. Someday Jesus will return and after he does, 2 Corinthians 5:10 tells us that “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.” How can you help those around you be prepared for that day when they will stand before Jesus? God wants you to share his love with your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, and classmates.

God’s plan and purpose for each of us includes living as salt and light through our words, actions, and example. God wants to work through you, just as he did with John, to impact others. Let him work through you today!

As you pray, ask God to bring to mind the name of someone he wants you to impact. Then take a step to make a difference in that person’s life for Christ.
