Dwell, Not Drift

Read: Psalm 27

One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life. (v. 4 NIV)

Dwelling in God’s presence means more than attending church on Sunday or reading the Bible occasionally; it is an intentional, daily pursuit to know him and be known by him. It changes how we see challenges, success, and relationships.

In the middle of a psalm that describes threats on every side, David’s language in verse 4 is definitive. Regardless of all the highs and lows he experienced throughout his life, he yearned for only one thing from the Lord. Evidently, eternity was at the forefront of David’s mind. He experienced the troubles of living in a fallen world and grieved over the choices he had made in life. Degeneracy consumed his thoughts, and all he longed for was to escape the present and prepare his heart for the future.

David genuinely believed that there was no better place in all his life to be than in the presence of the Lord. That’s why he later declares in Psalm 84:10, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.”

Life today feels like a water current, so swift, loud, and full of interruptions. Digital noise, constant comparison, work and family demands, and the pressure to balance it all leave us adrift, without spiritual direction. Instead, hear David’s invitation: “Wait for the Lord, be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Ps. 27:13-14)

As you pray, ask God to anchor you in the eternal.
