Read: Isaiah 7:1-17
Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (v. 14 NIV)
The setting of Isaiah 7 is one of fear. Jerusalem was under attack. Though God sent Isaiah to assure him that the enemy’s plans would fail, King Ahaz struggled to believe. God even invited him to ask for a sign, any sign to confirm his word. But King Ahaz, concealing his unbelief in phony humility, refused.
God’s mercy went beyond King Ahaz’s reluctance. Through Isaiah, he declared, “The Lord himself will give you a sign” (v. 14). Even when man’s faith falters, God’s purpose stands firm. The sign he promised was greater than King Ahaz could have envisioned; a virgin would conceive and bear a son named Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” God with us! Not as a distant ruler, but as a present Savior who infiltrates our fear, doubt, and weakness with unwavering hope.
Like King Ahaz, we sometimes face battles that make trusting God difficult. Fear can make faith feel flimsy, and doubt can masquerade as reason. Yet Isaiah’s message still speaks; God is with us. Even when we cannot see a way, he provides one. Even when we are uncertain, he remains faithful. The assurance of Immanuel guarantees that God’s presence is not reliant on our confidence but rather rooted in his covenant love. So, when life feels uncertain, remember that the greatest sign of God’s faithfulness has already been given: his name is Jesus the Christ.
As you pray, ask God to help you find peace in his presence.
