The God Who Waits for Us

Read: Isaiah 30:18-26

Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. (v. 18)

This verse is one of my favorites, and it has often been a source of encouragement in hard times. As I think of the promise it carries, I’m astounded. The giver of all life has chosen to wait for us to come to our senses, wait for us to respond to his love, wait for us to turn to him for help.

The Israelites, in their anxiety and panic, turned to Egypt for help instead of trusting the Lord. Yet, despite their rebellion, God’s response was not fury alone; it was grace. He longed to be gracious (v. 18 NIV), to show mercy, to redeem them when they turned back to him. Perhaps as much as anywhere else, Satan tries to build a mental stronghold right there. When we consider God’s love for us, many of us can’t take it in.

That reminds me of a time my niece got caught up in a mess after ignoring several warnings. When I learned of it, I went and took care of the situation. She was surprised and deeply touched. Perhaps that’s how it is with many of God’s people. We are too caught up in our failures and struggle to believe that God wants to bless us. God’s justice means he cannot ignore sin; his compassion means he patiently calls us into restoration. The Lord does not rush to punish, nor does he delay out of disregard. His waiting is a firm exhibition of love and space to repent, and return to him.

As you pray, remember and believe that God is your Father.
