Hope Beside You

Read: Luke 24:13-35

But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. (v. 21 NIV)

The road to Emmaus was heavy with disappointment. Cleopas and a friend walked away from Jerusalem carrying broken hopes and unanswered prayers. They had believed Jesus was the promised Messiah, but his death on the cross seemed to destroy everything they trusted in.

Many of us can relate to their sadness. Our own unfulfilled hopes and dreams can be heavy, and the promises of God’s justice and redemption can feel far away. A negative pregnancy test. The death of a loved one. A failed business, or a lost job. Injustice or even persecution because of our faith. Most of us, in one way or another, will walk our own “Emmaus road,” hearts weighed down by what didn’t work out, by prayers that seemed to fail, or by seasons where God felt silent. Hope, once alive, now feels buried in the tomb of our expectations.

But as those disciples walked, something incredible happened; Jesus himself drew near and walked with them. They didn’t identify him at first, but his presence changed everything. He opened the Scriptures, reawakened their faith, and by the time they broke bread together, their eyes were opened. Their sorrow turned into burning joy.

When Christ reveals himself again, our “we had hoped” becomes “our hearts burn[ed] within us” (v. 32).

As you pray, ask the Lord to turn your fading hope into a living, vibrant faith.
