Because You Say So

Read: Luke 5:1-11

Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets. (v. 5 NIV)

After a fruitless night of fishing, Peter and his buddies were washing their nets; tired, frustrated, and ready to go home. Then Jesus stepped into the scene and said, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch” (v. 4).

Peter had heard Jesus teaching the crowd, and his response captures the anxiety between human exhaustion and divine order. They had worked hard all night without catching anything, so going out again and expecting a different result would not have been a likely plan for success. The boat was anchored, and the nets had been washed. It was time to relinquish.

From a fisherman’s point of view, the request made no sense. Yet Peter responded with remarkable faith: “But because you say so, I will let down the nets” (v. 5). This simple response marks the turning point; it brought about obedience in the face of discouragement. It’s one thing to obey when it makes sense, but it’s another to trust when logic fails. Peter’s obedience opened the door to a miracle so great that their nets began to break.

As we journey through life, it can be easy to feel as if we’ve worked hard all night without catching anything. For all our hard work, we still struggle with the same problems and temptations. But God is asking us to try again because he wants to reveal himself in a new way.

As you pray, ask the Lord to turn your night of emptiness into mornings of abundance.
