God’s Bigger Plan

Read: Jeremiah 29:10-14

This is what the LORD says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place.” (v. 10 NIV)

The people of Israel were living in exile, far from home, weighed down by disappointment, and wondering if God had forgotten them. The prophet Jeremiah brought this message: God has not forgotten. He still has a plan. But here’s the hard part to hear: the promise would come after seventy years. And their bright future would hinge on sincerely seeking God, who longed to bring them back.

While we bear seasons of affliction, we ask the Lord to deliver us, to bring us out of exile. But often God answers that we must wait patiently as we settle into this place for now. God will eventually liberate us, either through healing in this life or the life to come. Sometimes God’s plan is for brief suffering, and other times God allows us to take a picturesque route that builds our determination and character.

God’s word reminded the people of Israel that a holdup doesn’t mean rejection. The waiting was not wasted. It was shaping their hearts, a refinement for their faith, and preparing them for restoration. Sometimes, God fulfills his promises not when we want, but when we’re ready. I don’t know what your “seventy years” looks like, but remember God’s timeline is not desertion, it’s alignment.

As you pray, ask the Lord to help you believe that the promise will come, and help you see that the waiting was the time that birthed your hope.
