The Importance of Perseverance

Read: James 1:1-12

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life. (v. 12 NIV)

I remember my grandmother saying, “I’m so sick and tired of being sick and tired.” While the joke didn’t originate with her, even as a child I knew it was her humorous way of dealing with the pain, fatigue and weariness she felt at that stage of her life. Her suffering was real, even as it is for others—and perhaps for you as well. Our trials may include physical pain, loneliness, spiritual depression or a host of other things; these trials are difficult and can be overwhelming.

So how can James write, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds” (v. 2)? The apostle isn’t making light of suffering but is considering the end result: a steadfastness (perseverance) that makes us “perfect and complete”—a mature believer who lacks nothing (v. 4). We must ask God for wisdom—in faith, believing God will answer our prayers. James reminds us that the rich don’t have special standing with God because of their wealth. Instead, the man who remains steadfast under trial is blessed; after he is tested, he will receive “the crown of life” (v. 12).

This “crown of life” is the ultimate prize for perseverance, and we see it mentioned in other passages—including tomorrow’s reading. This crown represents victory and eternal life with Christ. What a prize to pursue!

As you pray, ask for joyful endurance as you pursue the crown of life.
