Christians Under Scrutiny

Read: 1 Peter 2:9-17

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (v. 12 NIV)

People of God are not protected from making bad choices or even falling into serious sin. It may be as small as breaking traffic rules to arrive on time, or it may be as serious as compromising righteous principles to acquire quick and easy success, fame, and wealth. Unfortunately, Christian leaders around the world are not free from immoral lifestyles and corruption. The world will magnify the failures of a believer because these failures are powerful tools, not only to defeat Christians, but also to defame the name of Jesus.

In today’s reading, Peter gives strong encouragement to live as changed people. This is because God has called us to a new life (v. 9). We’ve received mercy from God (v. 10), but we are also called to live in a way that is good (vv. 11-12). We might subtly prioritize the power of money, political alliance, human intellect, and shrewdness, but if these things make us compromise biblical principles, we are doomed to failure (Matt. 5:13).

As followers of Jesus, we are under scrutiny. Even those who dislike or even hate Christians think Christians should be moral. At times, they put more value on Christian values than Christians themselves. We don’t have to live perfectly for their sakes, but consider if your life is bringing glory to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As you pray, ask God to increase your faith and help you to be patient and remain obedient in all circumstances.
