Christ Our Rock

Read: Psalm 61

From the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (v. 2)

In 1834 as Edward Mote was going to work one morning he penned a few verses that would echo powerfully through one of the most sung hymns in the history of Christian music: “On Christ, the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand!” (“My Hope is Built on Nothing Less”).

Edward knew about a life built on sandy ground. His parents managed a pub, and paid little attention to him, leaving him lonely, spending most of his time on the streets of London. About that time he said, “So ignorant was I that I did not know there was a God.” Everything would change for him at the age of 18, when he met Jesus and made Jesus his Rock. Just as David asked God to lead him to the rock that was higher than him, so Edward realized that every other ground is only sinking sand.

Our lives are full of moments—days and seasons—in which it seems that our hearts are faint, and we lack the strength even for the smallest, trivial things. The cacophony of voices scares every little hope in our lives. You may be standing on sinking sand with a faint heart, afraid of today or tomorrow. But take heart! Remind yourself of David, and of believers like Edward Mote. Jesus, our Rock, is just a prayer away. Draw near to the One who has promised that he will never throw you out—Christ our Rock!

As you pray, stand on Christ, the solid Rock!
