Will You Be My Neighbor?

Read: John 1:9-14

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. (v. 14 NIV)

When my family moved into our neighborhood, people were very skeptical about us. After a few years of our stay, we opened our home compound to disciple young adults in evangelism, discipleship, and mentoring. Our neighbors began to know us better, and many of the people began to appreciate our relationship. Some said, “I’m glad you’re my neighbor!” and others “I am so grateful to live in this kind neighborhood.” However, some still remained hostile to us. Yet we were surprised by how much it meant for those who got to know us as their neighbors.

Presence is a big part of our witness. Our passage today was paraphrased by Eugene Peterson to say that Jesus “became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood” (The Message). When we reflect Jesus by showing up with an open posture, kindness, and generosity, we build trust and connection.

Recently our next-door neighbors were out of the country when a small problem came up at their house. They texted us about it, and I was able to fix the problem. It was a simple thing, but they were so grateful—and I knew they would do the same for us. As Jesus intentionally entered our world and became present with us, so we have the opportunity to discern how we can bring Jesus’s presence into our own neighborhoods.

As you pray, thank Jesus for making his home among us. Ask him to help you be a caring presence in your community.
