Our Confidence

Read: Acts 2:14-38

No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel. (v. 16 NIV)

When Jesus’s followers received the power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the news spread quickly throughout Jerusalem, and a large crowd gathered, seeking the meaning of this phenomenon. Peter, under the control and in the power of the Holy Spirit, addressed the inquisitive crowd.

Who were the people who had gathered? It’s likely that some had been present at the crucifixion and had cried, “Crucify him!” (Matt. 27:22 NIV). Possibly some were those before whom Peter had used profanity when he denied Christ (26:73-74).

Under these fearful circumstances, Peter couldn’t rely on his own authority. His resource had to be God’s Word, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. Peter effectively quoted passages to reinforce the message about Jesus. By showing the way Jesus fulfilled the Scriptures, through the Holy Spirit Peter spoke familiar words and moved hearts.

Indeed, “the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword,” piercing until it divides “the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb. 4:12). And before God, “no creature is hidden,” but all are naked and lay bare to the eyes of the one with whom we must render account (v. 13).

As believers in Jesus, we must always be in conversation with Scripture, learning and memorizing so we aren’t relying on our own authority but on God’s own revealed message.

As you pray, ask God to make the Bible the light and guide to your witnessing.
