Why Do We Witness?

Read: Matthew 28:16-20

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (v. 19)

Today’s Bible reading gives us the best reason we have to be witnesses: Jesus himself told us to go and tell others the good news. Bill Bright, the founder of Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) described the Great Commission as “The greatest challenge ever given to man by the greatest person who has ever lived . . . [a] life-changing, even world-changing, call of God.”

Jesus gave the Great Commission not only to his eleven disciples but to everyone who has believed and committed their lives to him throughout all the years. It’s our greatest calling to share the love and forgiveness he has given us with those who have never received him as their Savior and Lord. It’s reinforced by Christ’s example to us throughout the Gospels. Jesus himself said he came “to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10).

How will you respond to Jesus’s call on your life? Are you willing to tell people about others? Being a witness starts with your heart—consider what is holding you back and slowing you down. The command is clear: if your life has been transformed by Jesus, your life should be dedicated to inviting others to follow him too.

As you pray, evaluate your heart and hear Jesus’s clear command to go and make disciples. Ask God to help you obey this command with your time, your abilities, and your treasure.
