Read: 2 Peter 3:1-9
The LORD is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (v. 9)
Immediacy has become a normal part of my life. I text a friend and expect a fast response. I make a purchase online and quickly see the deduction in our bank account. I have grown used to having my wants met at a fast and often unrealistic pace, and when this doesn’t happen I get impatient. I know I am not alone in this.
What a sharp contrast to God’s dealings with us. God hears our prayers and cries for help even before we raise them, but we still experience suffering. In this passage Peter instructs us to trust that God’s timing is perfect. Is this because he enjoys watching us endure pain? Absolutely not (James 5:11). Does this mean he knows better than we do when we will be ready to learn the answers to our requests? Based on Romans 12:2, yes. Our creator is very patient with us.
Over the past two weeks we have considered God’s promise and presence in times of trial and challenge. God is faithful in hardship, even if his answers are not immediate. We may grow impatient, but we must remember that God never wastes time; he is always at work for our good. As we await answers to our questions, let us not delay in telling others of his great love! —Joy Petroelje
