How to Pray for Nepal

flooded valley in nepal

Catastrophic floods have devastated parts of Nepal along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors. Thousands of people are missing, and the loss of life, homes, and livelihoods is difficult to comprehend.

Words of Hope has worked alongside our partners in Nepal for more than 15 years. Immediately after the flood, the team there began to plan ways to provide relief to the affected communities. A small team of volunteers have travelled to the affected area to work alongside the local community in immediate relief efforts, providing food and clothing, safe temporary housing, and sharing hope in a time of deep grief.

Along with our partners in Nepal, we are also asking you to pray. We pray for many reasons. Prayer is an act of faith. We believe that God hears and responds to our prayers. Our prayers are like a fragrant offering, used powerfully by God (Rev. 8:3-5). When our hearts are heavy with fear and grief, we know that God will hold the burden with us (Matt. 11:28-30). Our prayers make a difference, and we are encouraged to be constant in prayer (Rom. 12:12).

As followers of Jesus, we stand beside our brothers and sisters in Nepal. Your prayers for and with them as they serve their people are one way you can support them in this difficult time.

Here are a few ways you can pray for Nepal today. These prayer requests come directly from Words of Hope Nepal.

  • For Comfort and Peace for the Grieving
Pray for families who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. Ask the Lord, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort (2 Cor. 1:3-4), to draw near to the brokenhearted and sustain them in their immense sorrow.

  • For Search, Rescue, and Relief Operations
Pray for the security personnel (Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police), local volunteers, and medical teams navigating treacherous terrain, landslides, and debris. Pray for their safety, endurance, and success in reaching stranded individuals and providing timely medical aid.

  • For National and Local Authorities
Pray for government officials, disaster management agencies (NDRRMA, DHM), and local leaders as they coordinate crisis response, distribute emergency rations, restore infrastructure, and manage vulnerable downstream river systems. Pray for wisdom, integrity, and swift stewardship of resources (1 Tim. 2:1-2).

  • For the Church to Be Salt and Light
Pray that local congregations, pastors, and believers in and around the affected regions will be mobilized with wisdom, practical compassion, and the love of Christ—serving as instruments of physical relief and spiritual hope to their neighbors (Gal. 6:10).

  • For Weather Conditions and Protection Downstream
Pray for clear skies, stabilizing riverbanks, and the cessation of further landslides and torrential rains along the Trishuli and Narayani river basins.

  • For Words of Hope Nepal
Pray for Words of Hope team members working on the ground in the affected areas. Pray for courage, strength, and wisdom as they work with local communities. Pray for their families at home. Pray that those they serve will be blessed with the living water they offer (John 7:37-38).

A Prayer for Nepal

Merciful God,

You are our refuge and strength.
You are our help in trouble.
Though the earth give way, and the mountains shake,
We will not fear.

We turn to you for the people of Nepal.

Give comfort to those grieving heartbreaking losses.
Provide for the needs of those left without food, shelter, and clothing.
Give courage and wisdom to your people as they respond.
Give strength and perseverance to rescuers.

God of all comfort, hear our prayers.
Amen.

From Listening to Leading — Sherpa Language Ministry

Nestled among the world’s tallest mountains, Nepal is home to a staggering 125 different ethnic groups. The country is best known for the hundreds of climbers who test their mettle on the peaks of Mt. Everest each year. What’s less often seen are the numerous communities who live in these remote regions. Many have had very little opportunity to hear the gospel in their own language.
