Read: Luke 15:11-24
When he came to himself . . . he arose and came to his father. (vv. 17, 20)
Repentance is like a door that can only open when you turn the handle from the inside. The prodigal son’s story reminds us that restoration doesn’t happen by accident; it begins with a choice to return. In the same way, repentance is more than just feeling sorry for sin; it is the deliberate act of turning away from sin and reestablishing a relationship with the Father.
When the son remembered his father’s goodness and the bounty in his house, something changed within him. Regret solidified into resolve, and he rose to go home. His confession was not eloquent, but it was sincere. Even before his father heard his confession, while the son was still a long way off, his father ran to him. Likewise, when we resolutely turn away from sin and come back to God, he doesn’t wait for perfection or eloquent speeches; rather, he runs to meet us with compassion. The same is true when we turn to God in repentance.
Repentance may cost you your pride, but it rewards you with peace. It replaces guilt with grace and shame with joy. Every time you turn back, heaven rejoices and the Father celebrates your return. Restoration is never far; it’s as close as your first step toward home. May his mercy draw you home and his love keep you from wandering away from the fold again.
As you pray, ask God to give you a repentant heart that turns quickly back to him whenever you stray.
