Don’t Forget to Pray

Read: Romans 12

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. (v. 12)

This is the third day in our focus on Romans 12:12. As we finish our reflections on this verse, consider the benefit of memorizing it as you strive to live it out. It is easier to rejoice in hope than to be patient in tribulation, and as we face these ups and downs, it is necessary and beneficial for us to be “constant in prayer.”

What does constant mean? Certainly, we cannot spend every moment in prayer, at least not on our knees or with our eyes closed. This word in the original Greek can also be translated as “being persistent” or “devoted.” Whether we’re rejoicing in hope or striving to be patient in trouble and tribulation, we can be devoted to prayer. In good times and bad, prayer allows us to talk directly to God, the creator and sustainer of the universe. We can bring him our burdens, and we should thank him for his faithfulness.

Believers in Jesus can also intercede by praying for others. As we will consider in verse 15, we are challenged to “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” Praise God for the hope that others are experiencing. Lift up to God those you know who are striving to be patient in tribulation. How can you pray for yourself, and who must you pray for today?

As you pray, honestly tell God how you’re feeling, lovingly pray for those who are hurting, and be willing to celebrate with those who are rejoicing.
