Unity in Christ

Read: Romans 12

So we, though many, are one body in Christ. (v. 5)

Reflect for a moment on the last time you attended a family reunion or gathered with relatives for a holiday meal. Ponder the unique differences of those in attendance even though they are related. Even the personalities, skills, and passions of siblings vary.

In Romans 12:4-5, the apostle Paul describes diversity in unity. He uses the example of the human body here and elsewhere (1 Cor. 10:17; 12:27) to show how the church is to be one body united in Christ with many parts.

Diverse groups of people can share a common connection. Examples include a sports team seeking to win a championship, an orchestra preparing for a concert, or a group of employees striving to better the company. For Christians the common connection is unity in Christ. Though we are wired differently, we strive to serve one Lord and impact God’s kingdom near and far.

Too often we gather only with people we know. We sit in the same seat at church, and we talk to the same people afterwards. How can you appreciate the diversity of the body of Christ by getting to know and serve with others, those you might not seek out? Starting now will prepare you for the glory to come. Revelation 7:9 describes this gathering before God’s throne: “After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb” (NIV).

As you pray, ask God to help you appreciate diversity and uphold unity.
