Read: Leviticus 26:3-13
I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. (v. 13)
As someone who struggles with depression, there are days when it feels like I am floundering more than flourishing. On those days, I need to seek and receive God’s vision and purpose for my life afresh. If I have difficulty sensing God in the present, it helps to remember God’s deliverance in my past. When I look back over my life story, I remember that our God is a God of loving purpose—we are always freed from one reality for a new purpose.
God’s instructions to Moses on Mount Sinai come after God has delivered the Israelites from bondage in Egypt; the law he gives Moses embodies God’s loving purpose for the Israelites once they finally arrive in the promised land. God paints a fresh vision of a fruitful people, land, and lifestyle for Moses and the Israelites, weary of wandering. It’s a vision of abundance, freedom, and fullness that comes hand in hand with faithful obedience to God’s precepts.
In the midst of our weariness and wandering, God is faithful to remind us of his vision for our flourishing. From Adam to Noah, Joseph to Moses, God invites his people into covenant flourishing with him. This flourishing is rooted in covenant obedience—obedience that is ultimately for our good and God’s glory. On difficult days, we remember: We are God’s beloved children, delivered from the bondage of sin and death for fullness of life with him.
As you pray, thank God for what he has delivered you from and invite his vision for your flourishing.
