It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment. (v. 27)
Many people only make plans for the duration of their life on earth, thinking that death is the end of everything. However, our key verse tells us that after death comes judgment. Death, therefore, isn’t the end, but there is a resurrection, and everyone will appear before the judgment seat of God.
If this is true, shouldn’t we be concerned about this? If a court case in this world frightens us and makes us take it seriously enough to hire a lawyer to advocate for us, how much more should we be concerned about the judgment after death?
Jesus is called our “advocate”. “We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1). He came to take the punishment we deserve, dying on the cross for our sins, so that whoever believes in him is not condemned, but passes from death to life. The judgment won’t find believers in Jesus guilty but will declare us righteous, because Christ paid for it. Those sins that each of us commits every day aren’t extinguished by death but will be brought before the judgment seat of God. That will be the most terrible day for anyone who doesn’t have Christ as their advocate.
If you haven’t already, give your life to Christ, who offered himself to bear the sins of many. He’s able “to save those who are eagerly waiting for him” (Heb. 9:28).
