Read: Lamentations 3:19-33
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end. (v. 22)
Who was the last person you told, “I love you”? I love you are some of the most important words we speak to each other. And yet, the best I love you is one that no human can speak, because it was written in our hearts by the originator of love itself. “We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19).
God’s love is more than well-meaning platitudes and warm fuzzy feelings—again and again the Bible describes God’s love as steadfast, never ceasing, and merciful (Lam. 3:22). The writer of Lamentations is processing the deep valley of suffering he is experiencing, both his own and the suffering of the whole nation as a result of their sin. Yet in the midst of it, he calls to mind the steadfast love of God as his enduring hope. People may fail, but God’s love will never fail. He is always ready when we turn back to him. This hope is rooted in love wielded by our Creator, and God promises to care for us from our first inhale to our final exhale (Psalm 139).
God’s love exists outside of our human struggle and is beyond our understanding. Even in struggle and pain, as we turn to God in repentance and obedience, we are invited to see and experience God’s faithful, sustaining love, a love that God wrote in our hearts, along with all of creation.
As you pray, turn to God, be still, and let his steadfast love wash over you.
