Obedience and Rest

Read: Matthew 11:25-30

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (v. 28)

When I go out for coffee with a trusted friend, after the pleasantries of small talk, as we ease into comfortable companionship, we can quickly name the burdens in our life. Talking about our burdens is a way of sharing them, and after our conversation, I feel lighter.

As the parable of the rich fool illustrates (Luke 12:16-21), there’s something in our human nature that falsely emboldens us to believe we can do things on our own. But you and I both know that going it alone is exhausting. In today’s passage, Jesus is calling us to exchange our worldly burdens for his holy yoke (Matt. 11:29). A yoke is used to pair two animals together, in order to pull a greater load than one can pull alone. Jesus is inviting us to take on his priorities, his loving nature, his humble calling upon our life. He is promising that when we do, he will shoulder the load with us. In obedience to Christ, and in shouldering his yoke, we can find rest (v. 30).

So for today, consider putting a pause on your striving. Much like with a trusted friend over coffee, share your burdens with God. He delights in dwelling with us, through the Holy Spirit, and is ready to be with you (1 Cor. 3:16). He is inviting you to rest in him and allow his will to lead you forward.

As you pray, spend time asking God where he might be calling you to find his rest in your life.
