Running from Sin, Running to Christ

Read: Genesis 39:1-12

How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God? (v. 9)

An African saying is “He who runs away from the rain lives to see the sunshine.” Joseph understood this truth well when he fled from Potiphar’s wife. His escape was not an act of weakness, but of wisdom. Running from sin is not fear; it is faith in motion. The world mocks fleeing as cowardice, but Scripture calls it holiness. Joseph valued purity more than pleasure because he feared God more than man.

To flee youthful passions is to choose Christ as your refuge. Each time you run from temptation, you are running toward the safety of his presence. The path of holiness often requires swift steps away from sin’s allure and firm steps toward God’s grace. Though the cost may be the denial of temporary satisfaction, the reward is far greater: a clear conscience, unbroken fellowship with God, and lasting peace that sin can never give.

Believers do not conquer temptation by reasoning with sin, but by escaping it. The first move toward holiness is often the step that takes you out of the enemy’s reach. Holiness begins with one decisive act of surrender, turning from what destroys and turning to the One who saves. In 2 Timothy, Paul teaches, “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those call on the Lord from a pure heart” (v. 22). May your steps always lead you away from temptation and closer to the heart of Jesus.

As you pray, ask God for discernment and courage to flee sin swiftly and to find refuge in Christ’s presence.
