The Company That Shapes Your Pursuit

Read: Proverbs 13:12-20

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. (v. 20)

There is an African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” The truth of this proverb mirrors the wisdom of Scripture: your company determines your character and direction. Many fall into sin not because they intended to, but because they walked with those who did. The people we journey with influence our desires, values, and destiny.

As Paul encourages: “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together” (Heb. 10:24-25). Fellowship is not merely a social activity, but spiritual formation. When you surround yourself with believers who love and honor God, they sharpen your faith and strengthen your resolve to walk uprightly. Godly friends challenge you, pray with you, and help you stay faithful when trials come. Conversely, an ungodly company weakens conviction and makes compromise seem normal. Many have wandered from the path of truth, not through rebellion, but through relationships that led them astray.

Following Jesus may require letting go of certain friendships to make room for those who nurture your faith. Though the cost may be painful, the reward is eternal. A fellowship should strengthen your pursuit of God and help you finish well. Walk with the wise, and you will grow in holiness. Choose companions who make heaven feel nearer.

As you pray, ask God to connect you with friends who strengthen your walk and to help you distance yourself from ungodly influence.
