Read: Romans 12
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. (v. 13)
As we reflect on what it means to “be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (v. 2), we’re looking at how God wants to develop a mindset that helps us be a “living sacrifice” (v. 1). With that focus, consider the call of Romans 12:13 to “show hospitality.” What is your mindset toward those who face poverty, mental illness, physical illness, lack of shelter, imprisonment, or a variety of other needs? Do you judge and blame or lovingly help?
Through the parable of the good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37, Jesus teaches us to show mercy to others, including those we might not normally spend time with. If we have eyes to see the needs around us, a heart to respond, and a mindset to discern how to act; we can be a blessing to others and show them the love of Christ. Many churches have outreach programs that enable people to donate food, clothing, or school supplies. Some churches offer mentoring opportunities, raise funds for homeless shelters, or provide car maintenance ministries. There are many ways we can show hospitality to others.
Verse 13 reminds believers in Jesus to especially contribute to the needs of the saints. That means caring for your church’s widows and widowers, honoring parents, supporting brothers and sisters in Christ who are going through a crisis or carrying a heavy burden. Caring for others is part of Jesus’s instruction to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:39).
As you pray, ask God to open your eyes to the needs of others and give you the courage to show hospitality.
